FAQ
This is a short overview of your most burning questions.
How do I register?
Click on the red “Sign up here”-button above, the sign-up form will open automatically. Fill in your contact data as well as the requested date of your Welcome Dinner. Important: please tell us your cell phone number, so we can get in touch. After you submitted your data, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Please check the Spam-folder of your e-mail inbox.
What do you need my address for?
We will select a guest who lives close to you. That’s why you should at least put a street name or the name of your neighborhood in the sign-up form. We will not share your contact data with anyone, not even the guest.
Who will come to my Welcome Dinner?
The guests come from many different countries. They are not only refugees from war-torn countries, but also migrants from other countries who we want to welcome to Hamburg with a dinner invitation. Some of them arrived in Germany not too long ago, others have been living here for years.
Can I receive more information about my guest?
We tell you the name, nationality and phone number of your guest. We will also let you know if he/she has any dietary preferences, e.g. if he/she eats halal or is a vegetarian. We also write you if he/she is coming by himself/herself or if he/she will bring his/her partner or kids. Beyond that, we do not collect any more information about the guests.
How do we communicate?
The guests speak some German or English, this is a requirement for signing up. However, sometimes communication can still be challenging. Everyone wants to learn German as quickly as possible and is happy if you do just that during your dinner. If you are at a loss of words, Google Translate can help.
What happens after the dinner?
Often an invitation by your guest or a another meeting (e.g. at one of our reunion activities) follows, but of course there is no obligation. We would be very happy to receive short feedback by e-mail; this helps us to further develop this project. And it would be fantastic if you post a photo of your dinner on our facebook-Side – but please ask all people in the picture for their consent first.
I live in the surroundings of Hamburg – can I participate?
We organize Welcome Dinners within the range of HVV public transit.
